Church service
“Nihil opera dei praeponatur” (RB 43): “Nothing should be preferred to the divine service”
The communal worship service takes precedence over any other activity. It determines the rhythm of the day and gives it its consecration; it opens, accompanies and concludes it and permeates the life of the community and each individual monk. Prayer concentrates what constitutes the life of a monk: walking in God’s presence. Thus, being before God without purpose takes precedence over everything else. God should be glorified in our being and doing. Accordingly, the celebration of the liturgy is a matter close to our hearts.
We see our life in this spiritual place as an indication that God lives among us. We make the concerns and worries of the church and the world our own and bring them before God in prayer. We want to be open to the people who come to us, regardless of our monastic way of life.
